Kostya Chalykh: “It’s great when you have ideas that you want to realize, and the craft is in your hands”
The frontman of the group My Rockets Up, the ex-guitarist of the group 7 Race, and today, the SunSay guitarist, Kostya Chalykh has fallen in love with the public for a long time. And this is not surprising. His unique stage charisma and incredible energy can not but impress on the performances of the teams in which he takes part.
It is as if it merges with instruments and sound vibrations in order to be embodied in the image familiar to him. Obsessed with the guitar and the constant search for himself in music and music in himself.
BritishWave.ru met with Bones on the eve of his concert in Saratov, where he was leaving an hour after our interview. His life is full, but he took a little time to give an interview for our readers.
Do you like to travel? Is there any place where you would like to visit, but have not yet been?
Yes, I would very much like to visit Sakhalin, where the sea is. It seems to me that there is some kind of special atmosphere of its own, incomparable with anything.
In one of the interviews you told me that you had a chance to work with people who had a musical education. You can tell how it affected you.
Yes, that was with the SunSay band. Everyone was there with education, there were nine of them, that is, everyone except for me and the drummer had education. Of course, this gives you a new incentive, you learn a lot of new things and begin to develop in a completely different way. Because it often happens that you know how you want to do it, but you don’t understand how to implement it. And it’s great when you have ideas that you want to translate, and the craft in your hands. This is the coolest.
When you were still playing in group 7, you said that bands like Pixies, Deftones or Nirvana influenced you. How do you feel about classical music? Maybe you have favorite composers?
Yes, I really love Prokofiev, especially his second piano concerto. I listened to his ballets, but only listened. I’d love to see all this action, how it all looks. I love our Russian composers, Tchaikovsky, for example.
And go to the concerts of your colleagues, is there time for this?
It’s very strange for me. For some reason, for some reason recently, I really like to listen to live music, but on the record for some reason I do not like it. For example, I’m coming to the city – my friends have a concert. I’m all right away. For example, I was in St. Petersburg for three weeks and during this time I managed to attend the performances of Sergey Babkin, 7th Race, Los Bananas from Lipetsk, they also had the Silence Kit from Moscow, then there was the DJ Sequence (Dima Anikin). I’m some kind of unprincipled creature – I can go to the classics too, and then immediately go to the grindcore. That is, everything is interesting to me, and I like it all. Everywhere I find something for myself, like a thread that can be wound on itself, then applied somehow to myself. I’m looking for this. Since I remained faithful to myself in my favorite music, to my kind of teenage addictions.
Here, as usual, the audience: you listen to such a group, then this, then another “oh, this is still interesting”, then you turn a few years old, new groups appear and this: “So, this is something … where I am “I already heard it. It’s the same repetition of this. And it looks like that!” And you stop listening to new music, because it all seems old to you. And at some point you understand that everything is gone … Already no music is not like it. I already had this, and I stepped over it and realized that there should be an interest in the internal energy of a person. That is, when a person performs with passion and love, and you must first hear this love. And behind this there is already a new vision of the old. Of course, when a person speaks and, if he likes what he does, the public also responds accordingly. The chip is in this magnetization. Now we need to love jazz (jazz was playing in the background – approx. So I did not like him.
You used to often give a concert abroad. Is there any difference between our audience and the public “from behind the hill”?
Yes, there was such a moment when we traveled with the group My Rockets Up, and then, we broke up, and stopped trying to go somewhere. But at those concerts where the audience really was ready to listen, I can say that the difference between our listeners and their listeners is one simple thing. Our listeners, they still consider themselves to be, as it were, connoisseurs, that is, “Surprise me with something else,” some kind of message. They are silent, standing and listening. And the people who are there, they have all “eaten up”, have calmed down and they just come to hang out. And whoever you are, you just go on stage and they meet you – hey hello, whoever you are, let’s do what you do and do it the way you like, we are ready to accept you any . And you do it, and people are “dragging it” from it, and they don’t have any addiction to any music – original or not original, they don’t have any such parameters, roughly speaking – a concert is a concert, and everyone takes part in it : the artist plays his part on the stage, and the listener in the hall. This is a common action. Like a bonfire.
