Everyone is able to achieve everything he wants. Interview with Nneka

In early March of this year, German Nigerian singer Nneca released her fifth studio album, entitled “My Fairy Tales”.

On this occasion, the German edition of Der Tagesspiegel asked the singer about her new album, about the life of an ordinary African in the diaspora and about political problems in Nigeria.

“My new album is called“ My Fairy Tales. ”In it I talk about duality, love and its two sides, about its polarity. I talk about the life of an ordinary African in the Diaspora from my point of view, about the obstacles that Africans face us. About all those who lived at home in Africa, and then moved to Europe. In general, we are talking about immigration and everything related to it. I also talk about political problems in Nigeria, the activities of Boko Haram, clan and religious conflicts, which isn’t fun at all, about resilience and how our nation is trying to live in spite of to the problems we face. ”

“The Devil said to the Lord:“ Among people there is not a single honest, not a single valuable person. ”To which God replied,“ You are lying! There is such a man – Job, he is faithful to me. I do not believe that he can turn his back on me. “To which Satan replied,” Well, then give me time to experience it. After that, he will no longer be faithful to you. “After that, he sent illness to Job, but he still remained faithful to God. Job kept asking God for what it was all to him, he was angry with him, his patience was exhausted, he was confused. He tears clothes on himself, his body is covered with ulcers and asks the Lord why he left him. It was the same with me. Many of us were in his place, wondering why to live at all. And in Africa like that. What the hell is going on there? Where is God ? You need to be steadfast – God will not send you that which you cannot cope with. Job tee. ”

“When I wrote“ My Love, My Love ”, I was not really happy. In this song I described everything that I want to have. You hear the line“ Many say your name, Love / Abuse and neglect me / Do you know that no one can ever compare the music that we created with you “- that is, I consider love to be something that goes beyond just a word spoken by people. Out of union, out of obsession, marriage, birth of children That which is love stands above all this. ”

“We’ve been following Boko Haram for more than 5-6 years and all these conflicts and wars … Nobody is still talking about them. I decided to write a song dedicated to this. About the clans, about how the blood of innocent people is shed about peace revolution How much more blood must be shed before we realize that we are on the wrong track? Why, in order to unite, do we first need something bad to happen to us? This happened to Charlie Hebdo. People took to the streets , showed that they are one people, when all the crap has come out. Why are solutions to problems when it is too late? ”

“If you feel that you are considered a second-class person because of your skin color, personality, then this will attract the appropriate energy. We can’t just blame the society or the country in which we live. I don’t know if there is such a thing the concept of “self-racism”, but there is a kind of racism aimed at ourselves. This inferiority feeling is instilled. This is a colonial mentality. “We are black or foreigners and therefore not good enough.” Actually, this is not so. We must discard it. ”

“I wouldn’t want to look back at my life, asking myself why I didn’t take these chances, although I had the opportunity. Therefore, I got a diploma at the university, so I started playing the guitar. Because of this, I continue to study. I I want to learn keyboards. I want to use all the possibilities. I had the time and opportunity to make a choice, and I understand that everyone is able to achieve everything that he wants. Now no one can stop me. ”

Next week, Nneka will present its new album “My Fairy Tales” in Russia. Concerts and presentations will be held April 22 at the St. Petersburg club Cosmonaut and April 23 at the Moscow club 16 tons.
